Thespians

Welcome to Thespians!

The International Thespian Society is an international honor dramatic fraternity.  The ITS, or Thespians, as we call it, is "dedicated to sharing the love of theatre in our schools and communities."

Thespian troupe membership is open to students from all departments, which gives dramatic performance opportunities to many students who might not otherwise have them.  Likewise, young playwrights, directors, and stage designers have a chance to have their work adjudicated by nationally known experts in their fields, as well.

Thespians participate in competitions at the local, district, and state level.  Categories include monologues, duet and ensemble acting; solo, duet, and ensemble musical theatre; set and costume design; student directed scenes, and playwriting.

Competition begins at the local level, namely our school, where our troupe competes for the number of slots available at our District competition in Ocala.  District winners who receive Superior ratings are eligible to go on to State Festival Competition in April in Tampa, Florida, where only five performance and three technical events are selected.  We also compete in the One Act Competition, held at the same time during Districts.  Two to four plays may be eligible to go on to State to be seen at the One Act Festival.  Our troupe consistently places highly at District and State levels.

All of this activity costs money, however.  There are dues for lifetime membership of  $20.00 to join.  Each of the competitions has an entry fee and the state festival has hotel and food costs that vary from year to year.  Consequently, we participate in fundraisers to help compensate for these costs.
